Indian tennis legend Leander Paes feels people should start playing those sports in which they can practice social distancing and at the same time, look to improve their fitness through it to bring some normalcy back in their lives.

Appearing in the latest episode of India Today E-Inspiration, Paes shed light on the tough times that everybody is going through this year due to the deadly coronavirus pandemic that has wreaked havoc worldwide ever since it originated from China late last year.

People have been forced to stay indoors within the confines of their homes due to Covid-19 with all affected countries going into strict lockdowns to prevent the spread of the virus.

But as things get back to normal, with the government starting to lift restrictions one by one, people should also start adjusting to the new way of life in which they will still keep doing what they did in the pre-Covid-19 days but at the same time, maintain adequate distance from one another and take care of their health and hygiene.

“For me sports is a vehicle to bring happiness to people and push my own body and mind to push my boundaries and explore different boundaries.

“And when you look at the way of life I have led over the last 30 years, it has all been about heath and fitness and quality of life. and just as we go through these extended months of social distancing, I think it’s also important to play sports with social distancing, a sport like tennis, golf, running, cycling, where you have natural social distancing, to use these kind of sports to start some resemblance to normalcy in life,” Paes said on E-Inspiration.

2020 was supposed to be the last year in Paes’s illustrious 30-year-career and had even called his farewell season as ‘One Last Roar’ but his plan of ending on a high was ruined by the ongoing coronavirus crisis. But the former India Davis Cup captain still has no regrets despite the difficult last few months.

“It has been a complete treat to have a career that I have had. I am very grateful for being in good health and shape in the last 30 years to represent out country and bring laurels to our country.

“These last 4-5 months have been quite intriguing and had never imagined that the virus would spread this far and affect the whole world. Never imagined that,” Paes said.
